Sometime after Niamh's father is murdered she emigrates from Belfast, Northern Ireland to America. She Hopes to escape, heal, and finally leave behind the injustice and oppression of British rule. But Niamh's past continues to haunt her, and it is through her disturbing dreams/memories that the reader gets a glimpse into the politics of Northern Ireland of the 1970's -1980's when civil unrest affected many lives. While in America, Niamh studies at University to become a teacher, she also falls in love with her professor, Rob McCoy. Rob is much older than Niamh and he is also grieving the death of his wife from cancer. He sends Niamh mixed signals of love, but eventually she has a heartbreaking split from him. Niamh returns home to Belfast to heal and to spend time with her family and friends. It is here that her long-time friend, Eamonn, declares his love for her.
Still disturbed by "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland, Niamh decides to become involved in the struggle to Free Ireland of British rule. This results in Eamonn and her quickly becoming targets for harassment, and their lives are put in danger. But this does not stop them from enjoying long drives and weekend getaways to the countryside. During these times in the novel a more peaceful and beautiful side of Ireland is exposed. After one of their getaways Eamonn proposes marriage. Niamh has many questions: should she stay and marry Eamonn? Should she continue the fight for Ireland's freedom despite the dangers? Or should she return to America where she can be liberated, safe and free?
